VHSL Football Standings: Week 11

One week left, and weather is creating a weekend filled with high school football games which will determine who is in, who is out, and where teams will begin postseason play on November 9th! Reminder that the top eight teams qualify in each region except where otherwise noted....

*******
REGION 6B (Top 7 qualify, #1 seed bye through first round)

1) Colonial Forge (9-0): 35.778
2) Manchester (9-0): 34.222
3) Thomas Dale (7-2): 29.667
4) Franklin County (5-4): 26.778
5) Clover Hill (5-5): 26.3
6) Cosby (4-5): 25.444
7T) Riverbend (1-8): 22.0
      James River (2-7): 22.0

ANALYSIS: Colonial Forge has clinched the #1 seed, their lead too insurmountable for Manchester due to the Lancers facing a winless team in George Wythe. Strength of schedule doomed the Lancers there. Who they face in round one is up in the air as a two-win James River team has tied one-win Riverbend, and, while the Bears hold the head-to-head matchup, it's rating points that determine who's in and who's out. Both idle Clover Hill and Cosby have a shot at a home game and the #4 seed, but Tunstall must beat Franklin County and for Cosby, they have to knock off an LC Bird team fighting for position in Region 5B.

6A TOP THREE: 1) Ocean Lakes 34.0, 2) Oscar Smith 31.667, 3) Woodside 30.7

REGION 5B:

1) Highland Springs (9-0): 30.889
2) Henrico (7-1): 29.875
3) L.C. Bird (7-2): 29.333
4) Glen Allen (7-2): 27.556
5) Varina (8-1): 27.222
6) Atlee (6-3): 27.111
7) Douglas Freeman (7-3): 25.9
8) Mills Godwin (5-4): 24.111
---
9) Deep Run (4-4): 23.625

ANALYSIS: First, the Mills Godwin/Deep Run game, now Thursday, is a play-in game. The winner grabs a playoff berth, and the loser is out. Because the #8 and #9 seeds are head-to-head, it blocks both Prince George and Matoaca from making a move to #8. If the Eagles and Wildcats were playing other teams, we'd likely have a four-team race for one spot. Idle Douglas Freeman can finish no lower than seventh and can slide into the sixth seed.

The real race here is who jockeys themselves into better position. Highland Springs clinches the top seed with a victory on Saturday, but, of all things, #3 L.C. Bird could actually catch them if Varina wins, but George Wythe would have to beat Manchester or Huguenot would have to beat Monacan. Henrico cannot catch Highland Springs. The biggest battle is who gets the fourth seed, and a home game, in the first round. Glen Allen has it now, but plays 0-9 J.R. Tucker. The Jags would get 24 points for a win, but Varina would get 22 points for losing to Highland Springs. Atlee, with a win over Hanover, could still end up at #4.

5A TOP THREE: 1) Indian River 32.889; 2) Maury 30.667; 3) Salem (VB) 30.444

REGION 4B:

1) Eastern View (9-0): 29.778
2) Louisa (9-0): 29.556
3) Monacan (7-2): 29.444
4) Dinwiddie (8-1): 29.222
5) Midlothian (6-3): 28.111
6) Courtland (7-2): 25.111
7) Powhatan (5-3): 23.750
8) Huguenot (4-5): 23.0
---
9) Hanover (3-6): 21.111

ANALYSIS: First, the known. Louisa clinches the #1 seed with a win over 6-3 Fluvanna. Then it gets crazy. Monacan can threaten Eastern View for #2 should both win, as the Chiefs play 4-5 Huguenot, while the Cyclones play 1-8 King George. Dinwiddie may win and still stay at #4, but a slip above them, and off they go, and there's a tiny chance Midlothian moves to #4, but only if Colonial Heights pulls the upset of the year over the Generals.

Midlothian won't finish lower than fifth. Hanover is still alive to sneak in at #8, but they must beat Atlee, Monacan must defeat Huguenot. A Mills Godwin win over Deep Run couldn't hurt.

4A TOP THREE: 1) Lafayette 32.0; 2) Lake Taylor 30.556; 3) Deep Creek 25.444

REGION 3A:

1) Phoebus (8-1): 30.667
2) Hopewell (7-1): 29.375
3) Booker T. Washington (6-3): 24.667
4) I.C. Norcom (5-4): 24.333
5) Park View-South Hill (7-2): 24.111
6) York (6-3): 23.111
7) Petersburg (6-3): 22.667
8) New Kent (6-3): 22.333
---
9) Tabb (4-5): 20.778
10) Lakeland (2-7): 20.0

ANALYSIS: If Phoebus defeats Menchville, the Phantoms will take the #1 seed. Hopewell can finish no worse than #2. The big race now is at the bottom where Petersburg is trying to hold on with New Kent breathing down their neck for #7. Both seem safely in at this point.

REGION 3B:

1) Spotsylvania (6-3): 23.0
2) Culpeper Co. (5-4): 22.778
3) Thomas Jefferson (5-4): 21.667
4) Brentsville District (5-5): 19.6
5) John Marshall (3-6): 18.556
6) James Monroe (2-7): 17.556
7) Skyline (2-7): 16.556
8) William Monroe (3-6): 16.333
--
9T) Armstrong (1-8): 16.0
      George Wythe (0-9): 16.0

ANALYSIS: Thomas Jefferson is in, and should host a first round game. John Marshall, with a win over Thomas Jefferson, would possibly move past Brentsville, whose regular season is done. Yes, Armstrong or George Wythe, even if they lose, could move past William Monroe, who plays Culpeper, into the top eight, but Culpeper must win.

REGION 2A:

1) Amelia (9-0): 25.111
2) Goochland (9-0): 24.750 (one game non-VHSL)
3) Poquoson (7-2): 24.444
4) King William (7-1): 23.143 (one game non-VHSL)
5) Greensville (5-4): 18.556
6) Nottoway (5-4): 18.333
7) Arcadia (5-4): 16.778
8) Brunswick (3-6): 16.333
---
9) Nandua (3-7): 15.3
10) Bluestone (3-7): 15.1

ANALYSIS: It's a Saturday showdown between Amelia and Goochland and, even if Poquoson beats York, the winner between the Raiders and Bulldogs will likely grab the #1 seed. King William won't finish lower than fourth.

2B TOP THREE: 1) East Rockingham 27.111; 2) Central-Woodstock 23.556; 3) Luray 22.556

REGION 1A:
ANALYSIS: Rappahannock and Franklin are tied for first, Essex is in fifth, half a point behind West Point for the fourth seed (and a first round home game), with Northampton just behind them in sixth by less than four-tenths of a point. If Essex beats Rappahannock and Clarke County beats West Point, a Trojans home game is definitely possible.

VHSL Football Region Standings: Week 10

Two weeks left, games being moved around again, it's a wild stretch to the finish! Here are the latest official standings. Note that all regions bring their top eight except where noted:

REGION 6B (Top 7 In, #1 Seed with bye in Round 1):

1) Colonial Forge (8-0): 34.750
2) Manchester (8-0): 34.000
3) Thomas Dale (6-2): 29.250
4) Cosby (4-4): 25.750
5) Franklin County (4-4): 25.000
6) Clover Hill (4-5): 24.667
7) Riverbend (1-7): 21.500
---
8) James River (1-7): 20.125

NOTES: Manchester is stuck at #2 should Colonial Forge win out due to strength of schedule. Thomas Dale has virtually locked the #3 seed. The intrigue now is whether Cosby holds onto #4 and whether James River can find a win to threaten Riverbend.

6A TOP THREE: 1) Ocean Lakes (9-0, 33.556); 2) Oscar Smith (7-1, 31.000) 3) Woodside (7-2, 30.222)

************
REGION 5B:

1) Highland Springs (8-0): 30.500
2) Henrico (6-1): 29.714
3) L.C. Bird (6-2): 28.875
4) Atlee (6-2): 27.500
5) Glen Allen (6-2): 26.250
6) Douglas Freeman (7-2): 26.111
7) Varina (7-1): 25.500
8) Deep Run (4-3): 23.571
---
9) Prince George (4-4): 22.125
10) Mills Godwin (4-4): 21.625
11) Matoaca (2-6): 20.875

NOTES: The Springers in the drivers seat for top seed with two more wins, Varina jumps back into the race for a home game at the fourth seed with a win against Atlee this week on our Game of The Week. Deep Run needs a win against Glen Allen to solidify the #8 seed, but they won't clinch it yet. Mills Godwin needs a win over Douglas Freeman to jump back into the race, but won't be out if they don't, especially if Glen Allen beats Deep Run. Prince George has a late-surging Matoaca this week, that won't be easy.

5A TOP THREE: 1) Indian River (8-0, 31.250); 2) Maury (8-1, 29.667); 3) Salem (6-2, 28.500)

**********
REGION 4B:

1) Monacan (7-1): 29.750
2T) Dinwiddie (8-0): 29.500
2T) Louisa (8-0): 29.500
2T) Eastern View (8-0): 29.500
5) Midlothian (5-3): 26.500
6) Courtland (6-2): 25.000
7) Huguenot (4-4): 22.875
8) Powhatan (4-3): 21.714
---
9) Chancellor (4-5): 20.889
10) Hanover (2-6): 20.250
11) Patrick Henry (2-5): 19.000

NOTES: Wow! A one-loss Monacan team has the strength of schedule to significantly threaten to disrupt the top of the region. They play a five win Midlothian team Thursday, while Dinwiddie has a six-win Hopewell, Louisa plays winless Charlottesville, and Eastern View's strength of schedule is down overall because of playing in the Battlefield District. It will go down to the wire should Monacan and Dinwiddie both win Thursday. Monacan finishes with 4-4 Huguenot, Dinwiddie with 2-5 Colonial Heights. Chancellor finishes their season Thursday with Spotsylvania, and a win will go a long way in their quest to catch Powhatan, who face 4-4 Albemarle Thursday.

4A TOP THREE: 1) Lafayette (7-0, 30.0); 2) Lake Taylor (7-1, 29.625); 3T) Deep Creek and Heritage (5-3, 24.250)

***********
REGION 3A:

1) Phoebus (6-1): 28.714
2) Hopewell (6-1): 27.143
3) Booker T. Washington (6-3): 24.111
4) York (6-2): 23.250
5) I.C. Norcom (5-4): 23.222
6) Park View-South Hill (6-2): 22.625
7) Petersburg (5-3): 22.000
8) New Kent (5-3): 20.625
---
9T) Tabb (3-5): 20.125
       Lakeland (2-6): 20.125
11) Colonial Heights (2-5): 18.000

NOTES: Hopewell takes a hit in their hopes of grabbing the number one seed, but a win at Dinwiddie puts them right back in the hunt. The Blue Devils seem safe to lock at the least the second seed. Petersburg is fighting for a home game but must win and get help in order to move up two positions with just two games to go. New Kent is achingly close to the top eight, as strength of schedule hurts their hopes.

REGION 3B:

1) Culpeper County (5-3): 22.750
2) Spotsylvania (5-3): 21.875
3) Thomas Jefferson (4-4): 20.000
4) Brentsville District (4-5): 18.778
5) John Marshall (2-6): 17.500
6) James Monroe (2-6): 17.000
7) Skyline (2-6): 16.375
8) Armstrong (1-6): 16.000
---
9) William Monroe (2-6): 15.250
10) George Wythe (0-8): 15.000

NOTES: The Vikings look good for a home game in round one, though chances to move up are lessening. The rest of the region can be turned upside down with an upset or two.

**********
REGION 2A:

1) Amelia (7-0): 24.857
2) Poquoson (7-1): 24.375
3) Goochland (8-0): 24.000
4) King William (6-1): 21.333
5) Nottoway (5-3): 18.000
6) Greensville (4-4): 17.500
7) Brunswick (3-5): 17.000
8) Arcadia (5-4): 16.556
---
9) Nandua (3-6): 15.111
10) Bluestone (2-7): 14.222
11) Prince Edward (3-5): 14.000

NOTES: The Raiders and Bulldogs seem on a collision course to play for the top seed on November 2nd, while King William is very close to clinching a home game in the first round.

2B TOP THREE: 1) East Rockingham (8-0, 26.0); 2) Central-Woodstock (8-0, 24.0); 3) Luray (6-2, 21.625)

**********
In Region 1A, Essex is 6th, less than a tenth of a point behind #5 Northampton, but just over two points behind #4 West Point with two games to go. The playoffs are almost clinched for the Trojans, but a home game in the first round may be tough to earn.

WEEK 9: VHSL Region Standings and High School Football "Big 12 Poll"

Here are the latest Virginia High School League Region standings as released Wednesday morning, plus, below, the updated NBC12/RVA Sports Network High School Football "Big 12 Poll".

NOTE: The top eight teams advance in each region unless otherwise noted.

*****

REGION 6B (Top 7 advance):

1) Colonial Forge: 33.500
2) Manchester: 33.143
3) Thomas Dale: 27.571
4) Cosby: 25.714
5) Clover Hill: 24.500
6) Franklin County: 22.429
7) Riverbend: 21.143
***
8) James River: 19.625

HEADLINES: If Colonial Forge wins final two games (they have a bye this week), they'll likely capture the top seed and the first round bye that goes with it thanks to strength of schedule. Manchester, after Clover Hill this Friday, finish with teams with one combined win between them. Thomas Dale gets unbeaten Hopewell Friday and solidifies #3 with a win.

REGION 5B:

1) L.C. Bird: 29.286
2) Highland Springs: 29.143
3) Henrico: 28.833
4) Atlee: 27.571
5) Douglas Freeman: 25.500
6) Varina: 24.714
7) Glen Allen: 24.571
8) Deep Run: 22.167
***
9) Mills Godwin: 22.143
10) Prince George: 21.143
11) Matoaca: 19.857
12) Lee-Davis: 18.714
13) Hermitage: 18.125
14) Meadowbrook: 17.429
15) J.R. Tucker: 15.000

HEADLINES: The Skyhawks stay neck and neck with the Springers if they beat Monacan and Highland Springs defeats Atlee. An Atlee loss separates the top three from the rest of the pack and opens the door to Douglas Freeman, Varina, even Glen Allen for hopes of being #4 and getting a first round home game. Having a currently winless J.R. Tucker team on closing night hurts the Jaguars.

REGION 4B:

1) Eastern View: 28.500
2) Monacan: 28.429
3) Louisa: 28.286
4) Dinwiddie: 28.000
5) Midlothian: 24.571
6) Courtland: 24.429
7) Huguenot: 22.143
8) Powhatan: 20.667
***
9) Chancellor: 20.125
10) Hanover: 19.714
11) Patrick Henry: 17.667
12) King George: 16.250
13) Caroline: 14.857

HEADLINES: We're essentially down to ten teams for eight spots unless PH can knock off Armstrong and Highland Springs the next two weeks. Hanover needs to beat Henrico Friday. At the top, Dinwiddie gets Petersburg (5-2) and Hopewell (6-0) in back to back weeks. Monacan gets L.C. Bird, Midlothian, and Huguenot. If Chiefs sweep, they could out point even a 10-0 Eastern View, who only has two games left.

REGION 3A:

1T) Phoebus 27.667
2) Hopewell 27.333
3) York: 23.286
4T) I.C. Norcom: 22.750
4T) B.T. Washington: 22.750
6) Petersburg: 22.143
7) Park View-South Hill: 22.000
8T) Tabb: 18.571
8T) New Kent: 18.571
***
10) Lakeland: 18.000
11) Colonial Heights: 17.333
12) Southampton: 15.333

HEADLINES: It's a fight to the finish for the Phantoms and Blue Devils for #1. First things first, Hopewell has to contend with Thomas Dale this Friday. Petersburg's hopes for a first round home game took a hit in the disappointing loss at Thomas Dale last Friday. Now they need at least one more win to solidify postseason play.

REGION 3B:

1) Culpeper Co.: 21.571
2) Spotsylvania: 21.429
3) Brentsville District: 19.000
4) Thomas Jefferson: 18.714
5) John Marshall: 17.286
6) Manassas Park 17.000 (only listed with one game)
7) James Monroe: 16.714
8) Skyline: 16.429
9) Armstrong: 16.167
***
10) George Wythe: 14.857
11) William Monroe: 13.714
12) Warren County: 13.286

HEADLINES: TJ is sliding as they play through the Colonial District. A win soon helps keep them home in the first round. We still don't know why a Manassas Park team, who announced in August they wouldn't play this year, is still listed by the VHSL in the region standings.

REGION 2A:

1) Goochland: 23.200 (game vs Fork Union doesn't count)
2) Poquoson: 22.833
3) Amelia: 22.667
4) King William: 20.833
5) Greensville: 16.857
6) Nottoway: 16.333
7) Brunswick: 16.000
8) Arcadia: 15.375
***
9) Nandua: 15.250

POINTS FORMULA:

For winning a game, based on Class of opponent, you receive:

Class 6: 26 points
Class 5: 24 points
Class 4: 22 points
Class 3: 20 points
Class 2: 18 points
Class 1: 16 points

For losing a game, based on Class of opponent, you receive:

Class 6: 14 points
Class 5: 12 points
Class 4: 10 points
Class 3:   8 points
Class 2:   6 points
Class 1:   4 points

A) If you play a team in a lower Class, you receive two bonus points per classification. For example, when a Class 5 team plays a Class 4 team, you get 24, not 22 points for a win, or 12, and not 10, for a loss. It's a reward for playing teams in lower classifications, primarily for district teams.

B) If you play a higher Class, you receive those points. For example, when L.C. Bird, a Class 5 school, defeated Clover Hill, a Class 6 school, last Friday, they received 26 points for the win.

C) You receive two bonus points for every game a defeated opponent wins

D) You receive one bonus point for every game an opponent who defeated you wins

E) You receive no points if an opponent you play loses a game

You add all the points, divide by number of VHSL-recognized games played to get the power point rating.
