Spiders Atop Preseason Women's XC Poll

Richmond Women Named A-10 Preseason Cross Country Favorites


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Richmond Women’s Cross Country team has been selected as the favorite to repeat as Atlantic 10 Conference Champions in a poll conducted of the league’s 14 head coaches, the A-10 announced on Tuesday.

Richmond, the defending A-10 champion, returns three top-20 performers from last year’s championship in juniors Courtney Thompson (11th place), Amanda Corbosiero (16th place) and Kaelyn Heinicke (20th place). 

Duquesne, the 2015 A-10 runner up, is in pursuit of its third A-10 title and returns two top-10 finishers from last year’s championship including junior Jenny Delsignore (6th place) and senior Valerie Palermo (9th place).

Massachusetts was selected third in the poll and finished tied for third at the 2015 championship. Leading the way for the Minutewomen is senior Heather MacLean. MacLean was the individual runner-up at the 2015 championship.

La Salle was predicted to finish fourth in the poll. The Explorers are led by last year’s individual champion, junior Morgan Szekely.  Szekely concluded her 2015 season finishing 45th out of a field of 254 runners with a time of 20:29.8 (6K) at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Saint Louis finished fifth in the poll and was followed by George Washington, Davidson, Saint Joseph’s, Dayton, George Mason, Fordham, Rhode Island, VCU and St. Bonaventure.

The 2016 Atlantic 10 Women’s Cross Country Championship will be hosted by the University of Richmond at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Va. on October 29. The Cross Country regular season begins on Thursday, September 1.
