FOOTBALL: Week 4 Super 12 High School Football Poll

Defenses made big statements across the Central Region in week three of the high school football season, but none bigger than the performance which causes a change at the top of our Super 12 High School Football Poll for the second week in a row.

1) DINWIDDIE (3-0, was #2, vs. Salem Friday, 7pm): The Generals finally get a win over Highland Springs, at Highland Springs, and the key was defense. Down 21-14 at the half, Dinwiddie allowed zero, zero points in the second half and overtime to stun the Springers 28-21. Outside of Dinwiddie County before this game, 8 or 9 out of 10 high school football fans would have picked Highland Springs in a close one. The Dinwiddie defense tilted it the other way. Now, not to have a letdown at home with a program the Generals are very familiar with: Salem.

2) BENEDICTINE (3-0, was #1, vs. Georgetown Prep Saturday, 1pm): Speaking of defense! The Cadets have yet to allow a single point this season while scoring 138 points in their first three games. With 1-2 Georgetown Prep coming down from Bethesda, Maryland for a Saturday tilt, Benedictine could continue both the defensive dominance, and the offensive firepower. As of now, the defending state champions are one of four VISAA teams in the area that are 3-0, but arguably the best at this point. But there's a long way, and a lot of rivalry games, to go.

3) VARINA (2-1, was #3, at Hermitage Friday, 7pm): I.C. Norcom had no chance Friday as Varina went to the 757 with authority, taking out some frustration from letting a win over Maury slip through their fingertips the week before. Now comes the annual mid-September battle with county rival Hermitage, a 2-0 squad that, after a bye week, takes a huge step up in competition, having defeated two winless squads in Matoaca and Henrico to begin the season. We'll know a lot more about the Panthers late Friday night.

4) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (1-2, was #4, at South County Friday, 7pm): We need to put Friday's loss to Dinwiddie in perspective. Had Highland Springs made one, just one, final defensive stop in the final seconds of regulation, everything would be different. We'd be talking about the Springer defense. We still need to. No blame to them for the defeat. Thus, it's hard to consider punishing the team with a further drop. The trip to Northern Virginia to face South County (1-1) comes, we believe, at a good time. Occasionally, a road trip at a crucial point in a season can serve as a galvanizer. 

5) MANCHESTER (3-0, was #5, vs. Clover Hill Friday, 7pm): After a first half struggle with an improved James River team, up 14-13 at the break, the Lancer defense clamped down, and did what winning programs do: put a game away after halftime. They'll be the big favorites in the friendly confines Friday against a rebuilding Clover Hill squad.

6) THOMAS DALE (2-0, was #6, vs. #10 Glen Allen Friday, 7pm): A veteran, successful coach knows how to use a bye week to their advantage. In the case of Kevin Tucker down in Chester, he takes two games to continue to paint the canvas of his team, one that went through such adversity a season ago, and put them in a position for a special season. Add to that just a tinge of a revenge factor with 2-1 Glen Allen coming in this Friday, and Ed Karpus Field should be filled with raucous Knight fans. The Jaguars held Thomas Dale to just three points in a loss last season. They'll look to slow down Ralphie Puccinelli and the Jags. 

7) LOUISA (2-0, was #7, at Matoaca Friday, 7pm): Also coming off a bye week are the Lions, who make the 72 mile trip to face a Warrior program obviously in transition. Now, to be fair, Matoaca lost to teams still unbeaten in Hermitage and #2 Benedictine. But stopping Savion Hiter, Dyzier Carter, Levi Wilson and the Lions offense is a very tall task. 

8) TRINITY EPISCOPAL (3-0, was #8, at St. Michael the Archangel Saturday, 5pm at Riverbend HS, Spotsylvania): In the season opener, Benedictine shut down their 2024 state championship opponents in St. Michael 38-0. Last Saturday, Trinity Episcopal handed Woodberry Forest their first loss in nearly two years with a 40-7 throttling. Davion Brown and the Titans are firing on all cylinders, but beware. St. Michael is coming off a come from behind 41-38 win over Paul VI where quarterback Austin Mawyer passed for 508 yards and scored six touchdowns, and their defense intercepted a would be game winning throw at the one yard line in the final seconds. They're better than 1-2. 

9) ST. CHRISTOPHER'S (3-0, was #9, at Norfolk Academy Friday, 6:30pm): And another defensive gem, including a blocked field goal attempt, as the Saints stayed unbeaten with a 17-0 win over Bullis. While not putting up gaudy statistics, St. Christopher's is winning with a gritty style of play, which is made much easier to do when Darius Gray is on your line. The Bulldogs are also 3-0 on the season.

10) GLEN ALLEN (2-1, was #10, at #6 Thomas Dale Friday, 7pm): After the bitter disappointment of the walk-off loss at home to Manchester, the Jags took care of business in Ashland Friday defeating Patrick Henry. Now, it's another, and much bigger, road trip this week to face a Thomas Dale team who we mentioned earlier has long memories of a season ago. But the Knights haven't faced Puccinelli and this Jaguar offense, either. 

11) HUGUENOT (1-1, was #11, vs. Cosby Friday, 7pm): They're fine. We all knew they would be. After their win last Thursday over Clover Hill which featured a record-setting performance from quarterback Charles Scott, they return home to face Cosby, coming off their first win of the year. Get a victory here, then the Falcons get set to go to.....

12) MIDLOTHIAN (3-0, was #12, vs. RSFA Thursday, 7pm): Powhatan did get a touchdown against the Trojan defense, but that's all. Midlothian's consistent performance Friday puts them in a position where, with a win Thursday against the Bulldogs, would have them 4-0 with Huguenot coming as the final opponent in this unusual five-game homestand on September 26th. Three wins, giving up just ten points total. Defense, defense, defense.

FOOTBALL: Week Three Super 12 High School Football Poll

Now polling gets interesting! #1 and #2 go down against highly ranked out of town opponents in very close games, while #3 and #4 stay unbeaten with huge blowouts. And, two of the four do battle this Friday! Let's see how they stack up in our latest poll.

1) BENEDICTINE (2-0, was #3, at Blue Ridge Friday, 3pm): We need to take a moment and give huge props to the area private school teams, who begin 2025 a combined 8-0. The Cadets thought, however, scheduling Matoaca would be an upgrade, but, it came a year late with the Warriors clearly in rebuilding mode. Next up? The 2024 VISAA Division II state champions in Blue Ridge. Champ vs. Champ Friday afternoon.

2) DINWIDDIE (2-0, was #4, at #4 Highland Springs Friday, 7pm): There was a couple of 804 wins over the 757 last week, including the Generals' dismantling of Granby on the road. Zion Boisseau has ten touchdowns in two games. He'll be hard pressed to get five in Kreiter 2.0 Friday night, as the Springers have no interest in a 1-2 start.

3) VARINA (1-1, was #1, at I.C. Norcom Friday, 7pm): The Blue Devils came sooooo close to the win with Maury. They'll head east to regroup against a Norcom team playing their third consecutive 804 school, losing to both Thomas Jefferson and Petersburg. Expect a big win for the Blue Devils.

4) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (1-1, was #2, vs. #2 Dinwiddie Friday, 7pm): The Springers had their chances against North Carolina powerhouse Hough (by the way, they are in the "8" classification, the largest in the Tar Heel state. And people complain we have too many state champions with just six classes.....), but will look to regroup and stop Boisseau and the Generals. This game will say a lot about who is at the top of both Region 5C and Region 4B come November.

5) MANCHESTER (2-0, was #5, at James River Friday, 7pm): A gritty performance on the road in an evenly matched showdown with Glen Allen that ends in the Lancers' favor with a game-winning field goal as time expired. Now, Manchester returns to the Dominion District for the rest of the regular season. They'll be the favorites in their next three games (James River, Clover Hill, Cosby), then it's all eyes on a home date with 2-0 Midlothian on October 3rd.

6) THOMAS DALE (2-0, was #6, BYE): The Knights post a Saturday shutout in the Battle of Chester, and now get a week to break things down and get ready for the gauntlet that is the 2025 Central District. But first, another non-district showdown a week from Friday hosting fellow ranked team Glen Allen.

7) LOUISA (2-0, was #9, BYE): Remember a week ago when the Lions dropped two spots through no fault of their own? They definitely earned them back in their Jungle debut Friday, as Savion Hiter ran wild, 328 yards, in his return as the Lions throttled a Courtland team that expected to give Louisa all they could handle. Instead, it was a 36-0 shutout as Louisa hits the bye week, then heads to a reeling Matoaca next Friday night.

8) TRINITY EPISCOPAL (2-0, was #7, vs. Woodberry Forest Saturday, 2pm): The Titans roll in week two, taking care of Fork Union 48-0. Woodberry Forest opened their season Saturday with a big win over Flint Hill.

9) ST. CHRISTOPHER'S (2-0, was #10, vs. Bullis Friday, 6:30pm): A 30-19 win over Episcopal shows no hangover from the Saints' opening victory at Huguenot. They are quickly staking their claim to try to wrest the top of VISAA Division I away from the two rivals who have dominated the 2020's, and the two ranked ahead of them currently. Bullis comes in 1-1, having won and lost games by three points, both in defensive battles. They are also coming off their bye week.

10) GLEN ALLEN (1-1, was #8, at Patrick Henry Friday, 7pm): A heartbreaking, but certainly not a backbreaking, loss at the horn Friday to Manchester is only seeming to galvanize this Jaguar team. They'll need to be. After the trip to Ashland, the Jags head to Chester to face a #6 Thomas Dale team who'll have revenge on their minds, then it's Hampton, and then they spend most of October in the Western Henrico gauntlet. Oh, and Trinity Episcopal looms October 24th. With a quality schedule, so much opportunity here for Glen Allen to fight for a top seed in their return to Region 5C.

11) HUGUENOT (0-1, was #11, at Clover Hill Thursday, 7pm): The bye week complete, the Falcons can't wait for Thursday. It may be a very long night for a Cavalier team in rebuilding mode.

12) MIDLOTHIAN (2-0, NEW, vs. Powhatan Friday, 7pm): With last week's #12 team, Thomas Jefferson, in a suspended game with rival Armstrong when the poll was released Sunday, we give love to a Trojan team who has staked their claim early as an excellent defensive squad. First, a rare shutout to L.C. Bird, then, allowing a talented Douglas Freeman team only three points. Powhatan should provide a quality test for the Trojans. After that, Midlothian hosts RSFA next Thursday, then, they wrap September with Huguenot, which will conclude a rare five-game homestand for a high school football team.

FOOTBALL: Week 2 Super 12 High School Football Poll

One week in the books and there is a lot to digest, and some definite movement in our second Super 12 High School Football Poll of the 2025 season.

1) VARINA (1-0, was #1, vs Maury Friday, 7pm) -- The Blue Devils took care of business in Roanoke, blazing to a big halftime lead and giving their quarterback the rest of the evening off. Now it's one of two games on the docket this week that, in the grand scheme of regional standings, matter, but not quite as much as you think. Win or lose, Varina gets big time points for playing Maury. Both will certainly be high seeds in their respective classifications. But it is 804 vs 757, which is all the juice this battle needs.

2) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (1-0, was #3, vs Hough (NC) Friday, 7pm) -- The same plot line applies here as the Springers welcome Hough from suburban Charlotte, who are 2-0 and began the season ranked second in the "8A" state classification poll presented by the Charlotte Observer. It's a relatively new school, having opened in 2010, and whose enrollment is around 2,500 students, more than any Richmond area high school. The beef up front must give Eric Byrd room to run, and the defense will have their hands full with junior quarterback Ethan Royal.

3) BENEDICTINE (1-0, was #4, at Matoaca Friday, 7pm) -- What a statement win for the Cadets in their opener, shutting out their VISAA Division I State Championship opponent from last year, St. Michael the Archangel, 38-0. And that was while losing their starting quarterback Carson Lambert to injury. Luke Kincaid stepped in and the rest was history. Next is a trip to a Matoaca team whose lack of experience was somewhat exposed in their opening loss to Hermitage.

4) DINWIDDIE (1-0, was #5, at Granby Friday, 7pm) --The budgets are smaller at this level of football, so Zion Boisseau couldn't buy his offensive linemen expensive watches or a steak dinner after their sterling performance in the Generals' win over Colonial Heights. But he did bring donuts! We think the Generals have found the next in a continual series of offensive leaders that should continue to bring Billy Mills and Dinwiddie much success. This week, another 804 vs 757 showdown as they go to Powhatan Field to face Granby.

5) MANCHESTER (1-0, was #9, at Glen Allen Friday, 7pm) -- 83 points. Acrobatic, insane plays. No one would be truthful if they told you they knew before the Lancers' 83-13 win over Monacan that a 70-point difference was in the offing. Simply a powerful start. Now, they head up 288 to face a Glen Allen team that was, a year ago, a Region 6A rival. The Jaguars are back in Region 5C, but the winner Friday will pick up huge bonus points in their regional playoff race.

6) THOMAS DALE (1-0, was #6, vs. L.C. Bird Saturday, 2pm) -- Step one in the reboot of a veteran Knights team is completing, scoring in all three phases of the game in their win over Cosby. Now, they get set to host the Battle of Chester this Saturday against a Skyhawk team still looking for their first score of the season after a 19-0 loss at Midlothian. The Knights can add to their momentum while putting their archrival in an 0-2 hole.

7) TRINITY EPISCOPAL (1-0, was #8, vs. Fork Union Saturday, 1pm) -- An excellent start to the season with the win over North Cross. Now they prepare to host Fork Union, hoping the defense can hold them to less than the 28 points surrendered to North Cross in the opener.

8) GLEN ALLEN (1-0, was #10, vs. #5 Manchester Friday, 7pm) -- What a dominant performance by the Jaguars in a game to be expected to be much closer with Prince George. The Glen Allen offensive line had an outstanding night, enabling Ralphie Puccinelli to run wild to victory. Now, however, they take a big step up in competition as Manchester, the 83-point machine in Week 1, comes calling.

9) LOUISA (1-0, was #7, vs. Courtland Friday, 7:30pm) -- Sometimes circumstances beyond your control cause you to slip some in a poll despite being a winner. Such is the case here. Even without Savion Hiter, the Lions rolled up 42 points in their win at Mills Godwin. But remember we discussed defense last week, and it gave up 26 to the Eagles. Now, the Jungle opens for the first time in 2025 with a huge early season test with Courtland, who are already making waves in Region 4B with a dominant win over Massaponax to open their year. The Lion defense will face a virulent test this week.

10) ST. CHRISTOPHER'S (1-0, NEW, at Episcopal Saturday, 1pm) --The Saints spoke volumes Friday night by virtue of their 21-6 win at then #2 Huguenot. The Falcons blew so many opportunities, but St. Christopher's did not, including a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Saints must learn from this win, and quickly pivot to Episcopal. Don't let such a signature win leave you hung over the next week.

11) HUGUENOT (0-1, was #2, BYE) -- The Falcons have to stew for two weeks over their lackluster performance against St. Christopher's. I do feel sorry for their next opponent, Clover Hill, who hosts the Falcons on Thursday September 11. This is still a program with uber talent. Melding it into a team that can contend for a championship seems to be priority one.

12) THOMAS JEFFERSON (1-0, was #10, vs. Armstrong Thursday, 4:45pm) -- A good shutout win over I.C. Norcom christened the Vikings' new era in Class 2. Now, a showdown. The Vikings host Armstrong, also new to Class 2, both in Region 2A, and both are favorites for the top seed. Thus, you don't need me to tell you just how big the first game of Week 2 is going to be.
