With just three Fridays left, some teams have clinched playoff bids, while others are keeping hope alive! Let's check the latest rankings:
*************************
1) VARINA (5-1-1, was #1, at Atlee, Friday 7pm): The Blue Devils go back to Hanover County, this time to face a feisty Atlee squad who overcame a 14-3 halftime deficit to ruin Homecoming for Armstrong 23-21 Friday night. Varina used a two-play, 36 second drive to end the first half up 21-7 on Hanover en route to a 55-14 win, but are still looking up to unbeaten Louisa in the Class 4, Region B standings. They'll be in the region playoffs. The question will be at what seed.
2) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (6-1, was #2, vs. #10 Hermitage, Friday 7pm): The Springers continue their recent roll of victories and have clinched a playoff berth in Class 5, Region C. Currently the top seed, they may need to win out to ensure staying there. That starts with hosting a Hermitage team who played their best 48 minutes of the season in a surprisingly easy 41-7 win over Glen Allen.
3) THOMAS DALE (7-0, was #3, vs. Patrick Henry, Thursday 7pm): Wyatt Jessup and company rolled to a 42-6 win over Dinwiddie to stay unbeaten. This is the fourth year of a non-district series between the Knights and the Patriots, who must win to keep slim playoff hopes alive in Class 4, Region B. Thomas Dale is still #1 in Class 6, Region A, have earned a playoff bid, and have it in hand to see that the region playoffs run through Crump Stadium.
4) MIDLOTHIAN (7-1, was #5, at James River, Friday 7pm): This may be the most consequential Coal Bowl in its three-decade plus history. The Trojans have won seven straight and have all but clinched a Class 5, Region C playoff berth. With almost no fanfare, the Rapids have won six of seven, sit seventh in the region barely behind both Hermitage and Glen Allen, and now get ready to host Gibson Gross and company. If the Rapids win this one, the fanfare will explode.
5) PETERSBURG (7-0, was #6, vs. #11 Hopewell, Friday 7pm): The Wave prepare for the biggest game against their rivals the Blue Devils in a generation. Despite a loss, Hopewell's strength of schedule currently has them atop Class 3, Region A just over Petersburg. Jerome Mathis' squad is more than ready for the challenge, proving they can win in slugfest fashion via their 26-15 triumph at Meadowbrook.
6) MANCHESTER (6-1, was #7, vs. Powhatan, Friday 7pm): The Lancers come out of their bye week with three home games ahead: Powhatan, RHSA, and a week eleven showdown with Huguenot. They've clinched a Class 6, Region A playoff spot, currently sit in second place, and are looking to win out and hope Thomas Dale falters down the stretch.
7) HUGUENOT (6-1, was #8, vs. RHSA, Saturday 1pm): The Falcons have scored 118 points....in their last six quarters. Opportunities to rise above third place in Class 4, Region B are on the horizon with James River and Manchester left to play.
8) DOUGLAS FREEMAN (6-1, was #9, vs. Mills Godwin, Friday 7pm): Three more games. One more win to ensure the postseason. But boy are these games going to be good. We begin this week with the longstanding rivalry between the Mavericks and the desperate Eagles, who, at 3-4, are currently ninth in Class 5, Region C, a full point behind Meadowbrook. After taking Godwin's best punch, Freeman still has to go to Hermitage, then finish the regular season hosting Glen Allen.
9) TRINITY EPISCOPAL (5-2, was #4, vs. St. Christopher's, Saturday 1pm): A very tough loss on Senior Day Saturday by three to St. Michael the Archangel, the Titans must bounce back hosting the rival Saints ahead of a trip to Glen Allen to end the regular season October 30th.
10) HERMITAGE (5-2, was #10, at #2 Highland Springs, Friday 7pm): The Panthers put a stop to a hot Glen Allen offense, overtaking them in the Class 5, Region C standings, now sitting in fifth. They could blow up the region standings Friday by taking down the leader in Highland Springs in a quest for at least one home playoff game.
11) HOPEWELL (6-1, was #12, at #5 Petersburg, Friday 7pm): Make that 283 points in their six-game winning streak. 40+ plus each contest. But they'll be hard pressed to make it seven at unbeaten Petersburg in a game that will likely decide the number one seed in Class 3, Region A. Easily their toughest test since their opening week loss to Highland Springs.
12) MECHANICSVILLE (6-1, NEW, vs. King William, Friday 7pm): Time to give some love to Mustang Country! After proving to be playoff worthy in their win over Hanover two weeks ago, Mechanicsville rolled up a 42-0 lead en route to a big win over Henrico. Now, K'Sean Hill and the powerful King William offense comes down Route 360 for what should be a fantastic matchup. If the playoffs began today, the Mustangs would be the fourth seed in Class 4, Region B and would host a quarterfinal. Mechanicsville hasn't hosted a postseason game since 2012.
DROPPING OUT: Armstrong (was #11)
CHASING THE DOZEN: James River, Benedictine, Thomas Jefferson, L.C. Bird
