FOOTBALL FALLOUT: Games Off Friday Due To COVID-19 (UPDATED THURSDAY 8-26)

As originally reported by Southside News Today, Friday's football game between George Washington-Danville and Dinwiddie has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the GW-Danville program, causing their program to be put on pause.

The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday September 21st at 6pm. Dinwiddie will now begin their season on September 3rd when they host Heritage High School of Lynchburg.

Meanwhile, in Richmond, the John Marshall Justices continue a quarantine that forced them to miss their final scrimmage, and will not make the trip to I.C. Norcom for their scheduled opener this Friday night. The game is officially listed as postponed at this time. The Justices will now prepare, once quarantine is lifted, for a trip to Armstrong to open their season on Saturday September 11th.

Meadowbrook announced Tuesday night that, due to "uncontrollable circumstances", their game at Hermitage Friday has been postponed to Friday October 8th. There was no official cause given for the postponement.

The Washington and Lee at West Point game scheduled for Friday has been canceled, but no reason was given as to why.

To the southeast, Friday's Poquoson at Southampton football game is off, due to COVID-19. Published reports do not indicate either which school, or if both, are having issues.

(NOTE: An earlier version of this story correctly stated the GW-Danville/Dinwiddie game was canceled. It has since been updated to reflect the rescheduled date and postponement status.)

VHSL ISSUES CLARIFICATION ON NON-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES GUIDANCE

The following message was released by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) on Wednesday regarding guidelines for non-instructional activities for public schools as it pertains to the coronavirus pandemic.

*******

On Thursday, August 5, 2021, Governor Northam reminded Virginia’s public schools that Virginia law (Bill Tracking - 2021 session > Legislation (virginia.gov)) requires school boards to implement in-person instruction in the 2021-2022 school year in a manner that adheres, to the maximum extent practicable, to any applicable federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance (Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools | CDC).

VHSL staff has consulted with the Virginia Department of Education and VHSL Legal Counsel to determine the extent to which this law applies to VHSL activities. This law addresses explicitly “in-person instruction” under the purview of local school boards, and therefore does not apply to extracurricular activities or other non-instructional activities on school grounds. School Boards are not bound by law to follow CDC guidelines for non-instructional activities.

Each local school board will adopt safety protocols for extracurricular activities - athletes, coaches, and spectators.
