The Future of The VHSL: New Regions, Districts Replace Conferences

The latest attempt at reclassification by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) was approved this week, but won't take effect until the beginning of the 2017-18 season. So, for now, conferences continue as do the current region set-ups.

The headlines concerning the newest "new era" coming next fall:

1) Classes no longer have the letter "A" associated with its name. So, instead of winning the "5A State Championship", you will soon hear it as the "Class 5 Championship"/

2) Regions, though relatively still split up when possible by regions of the Commonwealth, will not carry directional names. No more "6A South Region" come July, become "Class 6, Region B".

3) The RVA teams in Class 6, Region B, the current Conference 3 schools in 6A South, are in the smallest region in the classification, just eight teams. Region A has 12, Region C 18, and Region D 17.

4) The only "all-Richmond" region is found in Class 5, Region B, as fifteen area schools become members from Atlee to the north to Prince George in the south.

5) Patrick Henry will move down from Class 5 to Class 4, joining county rival Hanover in the new "Class 4, Region B". That region extends from Culpeper (Eastern View) to Dinwiddie, north to south. That's 126 miles.

6) Class 3 area schools are split into two regions, A and B.

Here are the new regions, followed by, in case you've forgotten, the area districts, as they return to replace conferences, which will be retired after this school year. District Tournament titles have not been played for in the Richmond area since the 2012-13 school year.

WEEK 4 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

GAME OF THE WEEK: #9 Douglas Freeman (2-0) at Atlee (1-1), 7pm: CLICK HERE to listen live online, or tune in to WHAN, 102.9 FM in Richmond or use the TuneIn app on your mobile device by listening to "Radiall"! We go on the air at 6:30pm.

Douglas Freeman is 10-6 in this series dating back to the year 2000. Recently, it's been back and forth, the Rebels winning last year, the Raiders victorious in 2014, and the teams splitting two memorable games in 2013, Freeman the only team to beat Atlee in the regular season, and the Raiders exacting revenge in the second round of the 5A South Region playoffs. The Rebels look for a 3-0 start, while this is the home opener for the 1-1 Raiders.

NBC 12/RVA SPORTS NETWORK BIG 12 POLL GAMES:

#6 Manchester (2-0) at #1 L.C. Bird (3-0), 7:30pm: Simply put, can the Lancers do what few others have, and that is score on the Skyhawks? In their last twenty games, L.C. Bird is 19-1 and has nine shutouts to their credit. Manchester did defeat L.C. Bird two seasons ago on a Hail Mary pass as time expired. Will it take another miracle for Frank Boyd and company tonight?

#3 Hermitage (1-1) at Varina (1-1), 7pm: The annual non-district battle between Eastern Henrico and Northwest Henrico. The Blue Devils, after losing late at Thomas Dale last week 22-13, are still looking for that big win that signifies they are back in serious playoff discussion, while Hermitage looks to keep the momentum they started after a big win two weeks ago over Meadowbrook.

#5 Henrico (2-0) at J.R. Tucker (0-2), 7pm: The Tigers let one get away last week, falling late at home to Hanover. A stiffer test comes to Parham Road tonight, as Henrico has rolled in their first two games, wins over Mills Godwin and Deep Run.

Glen Allen (0-2) at #8 Lee-Davis (2-0), 7pm: The Jaguars are starting to show some promise under new head coach Salvatore Camp, but run into one of the hotter area teams tonight in Mechanicsville. Lee-Davis is 11-3 in their past fourteen games, and, while tailback Nathan Evans has 230 rushing yards so far this season, he is not the Confederates' only offensive weapon, as Lee-Davis has scored 82 points in two games. (Twitter Live Coverage: @hanoversports via @LDTV_Sports)

#10 Monacan (3-0) at Clover Hill (0-2), 7:30pm: Coach Henderson got the "number one all the way" and will adorn his new hair style, or lack thereof, on the sidelines tonight as the Chiefs look to go to 4-0 against a Clover Hill team still looking to get in the win column.

#11 Hopewell (1-1) at Hanover (1-1), 7pm: Suddenly, this game has bigger meaning with both teams having suffered early losses. It's more important for Hanover to win, though, as the path to the playoffs is a bit easier in 3A East than in 4A East, which suddenly has a boatload of good teams already positioning themselves for playoff bids. From Louisa and Powhatan to Eastern View, Chancellor, and Courtland, Hanover has much more than just Dinwiddie and Monacan to worry about. (Twitter Live Coverage: @TaylorRVASN)

OTHER GAMES:

Patrick Henry (2-0) at Mills Godwin (1-1): How does Patrick Henry stop the Wesley Dugger machine? He scored seven touchdowns on 310 yards rushing last week in the win over Atlee. (Twitter Live Coverage: @hanoversports via @PatriotTalkLive)

Petersburg (2-0) at James Monroe (2-1): A great test for a young Crimson Wave squad to see just how far they've come in August and September. JM lost to Dinwiddie 48-10 three weeks ago.

George Wythe (1-1) at Powhatan (2-0): The Indians look to stay unbeaten at home, feeding off the momentum of beating Hopewell with no time remaining a week ago.

Colonial Heights (0-2) at Southampton (1-1): A long bus ride for the Colonials after school Friday; they hope to make the return trip quicker with their first win of the year before starting the rigors of Central District play next week.

Midlothian (0-3) at Cosby (1-2): The Trojans continue to search for win number one, while an uneven season continues early for the Titans, who look to get back to .500 at home, with or without the services of running back Joe Hunt, injured in last week's loss to Monacan.

Huguenot (1-2) at James River (1-1): The Rapids look for back-to-back wins over city schools after getting their first win of 2016 last week over George Wythe.

Essex (1-2) at Deep Run (0-2): This non-district battle between 1A Essex and 5A Deep Run was won by Essex last season. Deep Run is better, more cohesive under new coach Chad Hornik, but will it be enough to get the win at home tonight?

Thomas Jefferson (1-1) at Caroline (0-3): A rough start for the Cavaliers, including a 70-0 loss at #2 Dinwiddie a week ago. TJ comes off a win over Armstrong their last time out. This could be a very close game.

John Marshall (1-1) at Prince George (1-1): The Royals look to bounce back from home loss to #8 Lee-Davis. This series has seen close games, and tonight's could be no exception, but look for Prince George's Malaki Gurley to make a statement in the running game tonight.

Robert E. Lee/Staunton (2-1) at Goochland (3-0): A fantastic start for the Bulldogs, defeating some tough early competition. They are on pace to be a top team in the 2A East Region, and look to take a step closer with a win at home tonight against another quality opponent.
