THE BREAKDOWN: VHSL Football Region Standings Entering Week 11 (Updated 11/8/2024, 12:50pm)

X--Clinched Playoff Berth
Z--Clinched Seed (can't move up or down)

(Ratings updated due to Thursday results are in bold)

CLASS 6, REGION A:

1) Z--Oscar Smith (9-0)                35.556
2) X--Highland Springs (6-3)      31.889
3) X--Glen Allen (8-1)                    31.667
4) X--Manchester (6-3)                 28.889
5) X--Thomas Dale (6-4)               28.2
6) X--Western Branch (4-5)         25.667
7)      Landstown (3-6)                   23.222
8T)      Grassfield (2-7)                   23.111
             Cosby (3-6)                           23.111
---
10)    Meadowbrook (3-7)            22.8
11)    Deep Run (3-7)                      22.7

NOTES: Deep Run and Meadowbrook must scoreboard watch as their regular seasons are completed, and they need Cosby, Grassfield and Landstown to all lose for any change, which is already slim. Cosby also likely needs Grassfield and Landstown to lose and a win over Manchester to get in. The Lancers and Thomas Dale may end facing each other in the first round, the question is where. Glen Allen roots for Hanover to upset Highland Springs to have a shot at the #2 seed, which would give them home field for both the regional quarterfinals and semifinals. The Springers clinch #2 with a victory. Even if Western Branch stunned Oscar Smith, their lead for the top seed is insurmountable.

CLASS 5, REGION C:

1) X--William Fleming (9-0)       32.222
2) X--Matoaca (9-0)                       31.778
3) X--Midlothian (7-2)                  28.222
4) X--Louisa (7-2)                           27.444
5)      Hermitage (5-4)                   27.111
6)      L.C. Bird (6-3)                        26.778
7)      PH-Roanoke (6-3)               26.333
8)      Douglas Freeman (6-4)    25.5
---
9)      Prince George (4-5)           25.111

NOTES:  Who gets #1 if both William Fleming and Matoaca win Friday? It will depend on results of other games. If one wins and the other loses, it's academic. Midlothian can clinch the #3 seed by defeating L.C. Bird, who need a win to secure their berth. Hermitage, LC Bird, and PH-Roanoke all look to be in barring some upsets, but, mathematically, they aren't yet. Douglas Freeman is rooting hard for Hopewell to knock off Prince George Friday night so the Mavericks can make the postseason. After both James River and Mechanicsville lost on Thursday, their ceiling dropped from 26.4 to 26.0.

CLASS 4, REGION B:

1) X--Varina (7-1)                       33.0
2) X--Dinwiddie (8-1)               32.111
3) X--Huguenot (9-0)               32.0
4) X--King George (7-2)           28.778
5) X--Courtland (7-2)               28.222
6) X--Eastern View (6-3)         26.111
7)      Hanover (6-3)                   25.111
8)      Powhatan (5-4)               24.222
---
9)      Monacan (5-4)                24.111
10)    Atlee (5-4)                        23.889
11)    Henrico (4-5)                  22.667
12)    Caroline (5-4)                 22.444

NOTES: Remember, Varina's final point total will be divided by nine, not ten, after their Week 2 game was canceled. Twice. By two different teams. It's not that they asked for the extra bye week. Dinwiddie can clinch the top seed with a win over unbeaten Matoaca, and a win from either GW-Danville, North Stafford, or Colonial Heights. The Generals have the highest ceiling of possible point total after this week. Huguenot jumps Dinwiddie with a win over Monacan and a loss by the Generals. Patrick Henry must upset Varina for the Falcons to have a hope at #1. Before you think this region is all about these three teams, look out below. King George is red hot, while Courtland and Eastern View battle each other Friday, and it could be for the right to go to King George next Friday in the #4/#5 game. None of these three teams can crack the top three.

Then it gets nuts. Hanover needs a win over Highland Springs to clinch. If they don't, they'll need Huguenot to beat Monacan and Henrico to beat Atlee to possibly slide in. Powhatan has 1-8 Richmond School For The Arts. Mathematically, Atlee could win, Hanover and Monacan could lose, and the Raiders could climb in, again, mathematically with a lot of help from other results, with Powhatan almost assuredly in. But if Monacan upsets Huguenot, the Indians are likely on the outside looking in.

CLASS 3, REGION A:

1) Z--Lafayette (10-0)                       28.2
2) X--Hopewell (5-4)                         23.889
3) X--I.C. Norcom (5-4)                    23.333
4) X--Colonial Heights (4-5)          21.556
5)       Heritage (NN) (3-7)                19.5
6T)    Tabb (4-6)                                  19.2
          Petersburg (2-8)                      19.2
8T)    Lakeland (2-7)                         18.667
           York (3-6)                                   18.667
---
10)    New Kent (3-6)                        18.333

NOTES: The top seed is secure for 10-0 Lafayette. Colonial Heights could jump all the way to #2 should Hopewell and I.C. Norcom lose. Heritage is idle Friday, but the scenario that drops them out of contention went by the boards with Petersburg and Tabb losing Thursday night. New Kent must beat 8-1 Bruton for any shot. The Wave now roots for a group of teams to win so they remain in the top eight. Should Hopewell win, they likely clinch #2 as they play a 4-5 Class 5 school in Prince George while I.C. Norcom has 1-8 Booker T. Washington.

CLASS 3, REGION B:

1) X--Thomas Jefferson (9-0)        30.222
2) X--Kettle Run (9-0)                       29.333
3) Z--Armstrong (9-1)                       24.7
4) X--Skyline (6-3)                             21.667
5) X--Brentsville Dist. (4-5)            19.333
6) X--James Monroe (3-6)              18.556
7)       Culpeper Co. (3-6)                 17.778
8)       Warren Co. (2-7)                     17.667
---
9)       Fauquier (2-7)                         17.111

NOTES: Armstrong is locked into the #3 seed. Both Thomas Jefferson and Kettle Run play 4-5 teams within their classification, so both will get 28 points for a win. TJ's ceiling is significantly higher than Kettle Run's, thus, the Vikings likely earn the #1 seed with a victory over Colonial Heights. Fauquier must beat Meridian, then need a loss by either Culpeper or Warren County, and some help, to sneak in.

CLASS 2, REGION A:

1) Z--Poquoson (9-1)                    27.0
2) X--Bruton (8-1)                           24.556
3) X--Southampton (8-1)            24.444
4) X--Central-Lunenburg (6-3)  21.222
5) X--Greensville Co (5-4)            19.333
6) X--Nottoway (4-4)                     18.5
7) X--King William (4-6)               18.4
8) John Marshall (2-8)                 14.3
---
9) Randolph-Henry (2-7)            13.667
10) Nandua (2-7)                            13.444

NOTES: Poquoson is locked and loaded at #1 despite falling to 9-1 after a loss to unbeaten Lafayette Thursday night. Bruton holds the inside track on the second seed should they and Southampton both win. Central is not a lock at #4, and their regular season is over with just nine games (divide by nine like Varina!), with Greensville, Nottoway (9-game season) and King William all look to try to improve seeding, the Cavaliers winning their fourth straight Thursday. With Amelia canceling the rest of their season, John Marshall moves into the #8 position, but they are done, and will scoreboard watch the two teams below them.

***--WE WILL ADD CLASS 1, REGION A FRIDAY BEFORE GAMES!!
